Introduction

The Full–Day Advanced Driving and Car Control Course is an 8–hour on–road driver training programme that incorporates a 1–hour car control session at one of an approved and risk assessed off–road driving site.

The purpose of the programme is to provide the Ride Drive customer with a range of new skills for effective road driving and an opportunity to learn of the factors which affect the stability of the car, including circumstances that are likely to induce a loss of control situation. This takes the process of driving a car to a deeper level of knowledge and understanding.

Whilst this option is by far our most popular, it is only available within a few regions of the UK, this being due to the shortage of off–road driving venues. Please consult the map below to help plan your driving course.

Format of the Course

If you are within reach of one of our off–road driving venues the Full–Day Advanced Driving and Car Control Course begins in your home area at a mutually agreed meeting point.

You will already have discussed the aims and objectives of the day with your trainer, so by the time you meet, he⁄she will already have put together the structure of an action plan and picked out some appropriate roads for you to drive upon.

After a short safety briefing, you will be asked to follow a route as your coach talks you through each environment, identifying features and circumstances that might offer actual or potential danger. At the same time you will be given advice covering advanced techniques by use of which you can always be one step ahead of what is happening around you.

The points are always put across in a pleasant manner, helping to build your confidence, as well as your ability, in simple and easy to follow stages. For every suggestion there is a reason given, which helps you to see the logic in all that is being asked of you.

The Full–Day Advanced Driving and Car Control Course is available in almost all regions of the UK, including Leatherhead, Orpington, Cheltenham, Watford, Slough, Colchester and Bedford. Click on the map above for full list of available start points.

Your trainer will help you to understand how maximum control is maintained through the smooth and well–timed operation of the driving controls. These functions are completed by working in harmony with the vehicle and by feeling it along the road, as opposed to the more dispassionate process of operating a piece of machinery.

You’ll not be driving continuously for 8–hours, as there will be coffee breaks and a stop for lunch somewhere along the way. This provides the ideal opportunity to discuss the theoretical aspects of the course.

The Car Control Session

At some point during the day you arrive at the allocated off road driving venue at which you are carry out the car control routines.

The site will usually take the form of a disused airfield that provides a large expanse of open space and which is not accessible to members of the general public. We avoid the use of motorsport track venues, as the risk of car damage tends to be too high and issues with motor insurance cover.

You begin the car control session with a short safety briefing, which includes a familiarisation tour of the facility to risk assess the driving environment.

A programme of activities then begins and you will note how these exercises build from relatively simple manoeuvres to more technical applications of the car.

The purpose of the car control activities will be to help you develop an understanding of the effects you have upon your car by the manner in which you operate the driving controls. This is where you learn to feel the car as any electronic driver safety aids are switched off.

We talk about the drive configuration, whether it be front–wheel drive, rear–wheel drive, or four–wheel drive, and how this affects the behaviour of the car.

Please note, this driving programme does not involve a track day, participation in a motorsport event, time trial, speed driving activity or any form of competitive driving.

Off road manoeuvring and car control sessions are completed at risk assessed venues that are closed to the general public, so as to remove the activities from the unpredictibility of a public road environment. Standard road speeds will not be exceeded.

The car control activities are structured so as to be educational without harming your car. Always remember, you are captain of your own ship and therefore have the last word on whether you complete any suggested manoeuvre.

Everything we practice during the car control session has a direct relationship with how you make safe progress on the public road and has no relevance to motor sport or a track day.

Who Will be Suited to This Driving Course?

The first thing to say is we will not make you feel embarrassed, as there is nothing to prove here. We recognise that not everyone’s needs are the same and everyone will be starting out from a different level. The format of the day is always based upon consideration for the type of car you drive and the use to which you are to put it to. There are no Highway Code quizzes either, or any form of driving test.

The Advanced Driving and Car Control Course is best suited to those who are more technically minded and want to understand mechanics of what the car is doing beneath them. It can also serve as a great confidence booster for anyone who feels a little intimidated by their car.

Without getting too technical, this driving course may cover the use of ABS, for example, and provide the opportunity to experience what happens when the anti–lock braking system is activated when completing a brake and avoid exercise.

If you are interested in learning about the forces acting on a car when you and brake and steer, and why that is not a good combination to create, then this driving course is will provide much benefit to you. There is no requirement for other courses to be completed beforehand, so this option can be embarked upon as a first Ride Drive advanced driving experience.

Full–Day or Two Half–Days? That is a Good Question

Some people may find a full day driving course a little too much to cope with, whilst others will relish the intensity it brings. At Ride Drive we appreciate that everyone is different and everyone has varying knowledge absorption rates. That is why we offer the choice of completing the Full–Day Advanced Driving and Car Control Course as two half–days as well as a whole day.

At no additional cost to the price of a continuous full–day you may book this option as two half days. You can even book just the Half–Day Advanced Driving and Car Control Course, to see if what you get appeals to you, and then book the second half–day to be completed a week or so later. How’s that for flexibility?

However, it needs to be understood that availability of driving courses containing the car control session is extremely limited, owing to the limited number of off–road driving venues that are available.
