Content: On–Road Advanced Driver Training & Assessments
Vehicle: Customer Supplied Car

Introduction

A programme written by retired police class–one advanced drivers, based upon the Ride Drive Full–Day On–Road Advanced Driving Course and providing successful candidates with a Level–2 qualification under the National Qualification Framework (NQF).

The First Step to Advanced Driving is a post–test driver training course accredited by OCN Credit4learning, a National accreditation service for work based learning providers.

To achieve this level of accreditation the course was scrutinised and approved by respected members of a panel who operate within the training and qualifications industry. Our objective here was to provide a driving course that would demonstrate there is so much more to road driving than passing just a standard driving test.

The driving system presented is that of Roadcraft, as used when training UK emergency services personnel, and provides a very effective hazard assessment strategy with which to cope with road risk management.

Format of the Course

The course is designed to be completed over a single day, or two half–days, and takes the form of practical based on–road driving skills development, elevating on–road skills to an advanced level.

Before the day begins you will have the opportunity to speak with your trainer by telephone. This is the point where the date, time and location at which your driving course will begin is discussed. This is always at or close to your domestic area.

Whilst there are elements required by the syllabus to be covered, and to focus on key areas of core driving competencies, the course is flexible enough to be tailored to meet individual development needs.

Whilst speaking with your trainer, therefore, you can discuss your personal aims and objectives so that some or all of that you are looking to achieve may be built into your training.

The First Step to Advanced Driving Course is available from all regions of the UK, including London, Swindon, Dumbarton, Salisbury, Loughborough, Cupar and Norwich. Click on the map above for full list.

Your day starts with a short safety briefing and an outline of the day’s activities. You are then directed over a route of specifically chosen public roads, selected to provide the appropriate features and circumstances that will help you achieve the required learning outcome.

You will not be driving continuously for a whole day, as there will be coffee stops and a lunch break. These occasions provide a useful opportunity to discuss the theoretical aspects of advanced driving methods.

Before the end of the course you will be required to submit to an oral assessment of your knowledge. The information being tested will be confined to the driving system you have been practicing throughout the day.

However, providing you have applied yourself to the driving course you should not have a problem with achieving the required standard.

Who Will be Suited to This Driving Course

The First Step to Advanced Driving programme is available to all age groups of full driving licence holders and all levels of existing experience and ability. It will be particularly attractive to those who take their road safety seriously as it,

  • has clear objectives that are realistically achievable and which have a sensible, practical and real life application.
  • provides the candidate with a recognised level of achievement.
  • is effective in making a significant reduction in collision risk potential.
  • has recognition and the backing from a major British motor insurance services provider.
  • can be completed either as a 1:1 programme, or shared as a 2:1 training scenario.

Whilst the First Step to Advanced Driving represents an entry level option within the Ride Drive range of accredited advanced driver training courses, it is by no means basic in its content. In fact, anyone who is awarded a pass certificate after completing this course can be justly proud of what will be a significant achievement.

If you have never completed any further driver training since passing your test then you are not even close to realising your full potential.
