Did you know that driving instructors do not receive any training to deliver motorway driving lessons? It’s true and it is appalling. In fact, driving instructors do not have to take any driver training, other than to a standard to pass the DSA driving test, as part of the necessary process to become a driving instructor (ADI).

That being the case, will you be comfortable with your son or daughter being given a motorway driving lesson by someone who probably needs to have motorway driver training themselves?

How Good is a Good Instructor?

Motorway driving lessons are most commonly delivered by ADI driving instructors as one of the 6 driver training modules of the DSA Pass Plus programme. But did you know that for an ordinary driving instructor to become a Pass Plus trainer it only takes the completion of an application form and the payment of a fee?

Unless an instructor has received expert motorway driving tuition, perhaps whilst serving within the emergency services, or has been in some other specialist professional role that provided motorway environment training, that driving instructor will have no greater knowledge or expertise covering motorways than the every day driver seen driving along it.

Even if a driving instructor wanted to sign up to a course of motorway driver training, he or she would have to take that initiative themselves, as the DSA provides no practical training course for its members.

Having the Right Expertise

Ride Drive motorway driver training is delivered by people who have been specifically trained to work in a motorway environment, and are mainly from a background of what used to be called traffic patrol police officers. Now referred to as Road Policing officers, these are the people who have not only had the best level of driver training available in the world, but have also worked for years on motorways.

Attending and investigating incidents and collisions on motorway roads, and being specifically trained to do so, means those who deliver Ride Drive motorway driving courses genuinely have the skills–base necessary to provide the best quality information about driving on multi–lane fast–flow road systems.

About Our Motorway Driving Tuition

It is true that motorways are statistically the safest category of road in the UK. However, whilst road collisions are fewer in number, compared to non–motorway roads, they usually involve larger numbers of vehicles.

It is often the diversity of the different vehicle types encountered on motorways that unprepared drivers find hard to cope with, as well as a different style of driving being required. Add this to poor weather conditions and the risk of incident becomes much greater.

Motorway Driving Phobia

Do you suffer from excessive anxiety when driving on motorways, perhaps from a panic attack you once had whilst driving? Visit the Ride Drive Driving Phobia website pages for more information. Don’t suffer in silence as the condition is far more common than you may realise.

Another factor is The speed of the vehicles on a motorway is usually higher and therefore the effect upon those involved often tends to be substantial.

However, with greater understanding of the motorway environment, and with targeted training, the risks can be substantailly reduced.

About the Motorway Driving Course

At Ride Drive, we offer an intensive 4–hour programme that is specifically targeted at motorway driving and driver safety, and not just for young drivers. In fact, any age group or level of driving experience is welcome on board, as very few drivers have complete knowledge about motorway driving.
