Have you collected another Speeding Ticket, and have Too Many Penalty Points on your driving licence already to be dealt with by fixed penalty notice? If so, you are probably facing the prospect of being banned from driving by the Magistrates Courts. Why else would you be looking at Speed Awareness Courses?

So, you already have nine Penalty Points on your driving licence, perhaps for a selection of XS30 licence endorsements, and you are about to go before the Magistrates Court for your fourth speeding case. It may even be you have committed a single offence of speeding, but by a sufficient margin to threaten your driving licence for a first offence.

Speeding & The Magistrates Courts System

Unfortunately, you are now caught up in what is a very restricted system that almost demands that you be Disqualified from Driving for a period of time. This is by no means any adverse reflection upon the Magistrates, as they are only following guidelines laid down by a higher authority.

Disqualification for Speeding Offences is an ill–thought out system of penalty, as to remove your entitlement to drive on a public road for a period of disqualification from driving does nothing to address the causation factors that put you in the position to begin with.

It is within our experience that if you attend court, having completed some Driver Training, such as a Speed Awareness Course, that is aimed at addressing the elements that have played their part in you committing of Speeding Offences, this will demonstrate you have at least taken ownership of the offence and therefore responsibility for your actions.

The Half–Day Speed Awareness Course is available in many regions of the UK, including London, Winchester, Southampton, Cambridge, Stafford, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, and Derby. Click on the map above for full list of UK regions.

Prepare Well For Your Speeding Court Case

Firstly, don’t leave it all to the last minute. We frequently receive telephone calls and emails from people who are sitting on 9 penalty points and are scheduled to go to court within the following few days. If that is your situation, you have left it too late to complete a Speed Awareness Course. However, all is not lost, as there is still something we can do.

Secondly, try to build up a case as to why you should retain your driving licence and base this as heavily as you can upon intense hardship that being unable to drive will bring to you and those who are dependant upon you being able to drive. Back this up with as much legitimate evidence as you can.

A letter from your employer, to show that you will be dismissed from your job, one from your doctor to confirm that your wife or children have a medical issue that relies upon you driving them to their hospital appointments for treatment. In fact, anyone in a professional position who can honestly say that your disqualification from driving is going to really hit others overly hard is all good ammunition.

These are just a couple of examples, but make sure the information you are producing is genuine.

Booking a Speed Awareness Course

You need also to contact the Ride Drive office and arrange for an appointment with one of our local team to deliver a Speed Awareness Course. This is a half–day programme that is delivered in the same environment in which your speeding offences were committed – this being your car.

Our Speed Awareness Course will take place in, or close to, your home area, and as a one–to–one practical driver training event. Your allocated personal trainer will quickly assess why it is that you are in your current situation and set about directly targeting those elements of your driving style that have contributed to you committing the speeding offences.

Driver Skills & Risk Assessment

At the end of your course you receive a five page driver risk assessment report that highlights those elements within your driving routine identified as contributory factors in your commission of speeding offences. It will also show by what means those issues have been addressed, and comment upon the potential of you re–offending.

By submitting yourself to a driver training programme that is structured to directly target the factors that have played a major role in your speed limit non–compliance you are taking direct and positive action to address those issues. Rather than just take the punishment you will have actively stood up and done something proactive to improve. That has got to be worthy of merit, no matter what the inspiration has been for you to do this.

Will The Speed Awareness Course Work?

To be perfectly honest, there are no guarantees here. It is within our experience that some Magistrates Courts take a lot of notice of the fact a defendant has completed a Speed Awareness Course, prior to appearing in court, and will go to the trouble of reading and taking notice of the risk assessment.

It is also within our experience that some Magistrates Courts will completely ignore anything you try to put forward of this nature. However, these seem to be outnumbered by those who do take notice of your effort to improve, and often result in the defendant retaining their driving licence. It must be realised the result of non–disqualification is usually due to there being other factors offered with it, such as excessive hardship.

There have been cases where the submission of evidence of completing our Speed Awareness Training has failed to keep a driving licence, but has secured a lesser penalty than otherwise might have been. This may be a reduced period of driver disqualification and⁄or a lesser amount of fine.

The Magistrates on the day will make up their own minds as to how they will deal with you, and that is something completely beyond our control. If you go down the route of submitting to a Ride Drive Speed Awareness Course it will always be a gamble as to what the outcome will be at Court.

You may only get one chance in court to save your driving licence, and showing the Magistrates you have done something positive about changing your poor record can’t make things any worse. It also makes good sense to look at how you can break the cycle of offending, so that if you do lose your driving licence for a period of driver disqualification this time, you may not have to find yourself in this unfortunate position again after getting it back.

Left it Too Late to Complete a Speed Awareness Course?

Not an ideal situation by any means, but all is not lost, as there is still something we can do to help.

Whilst we may not be able to provide you with Speed Awareness Training and a Risk Assessment report prior to you attending Magistrates Court, we can prepare a letter confirming a course booking. We can even do this within a matter of minutes by sending you the documentation by email.

If you are prepared to pay by credit card or debit card for Speed Awareness Training in advance, we will send to you a properly headed letter attached to an email that confirms you have been booked in for training and you have paid the full price, which is non–refundable.

As there are no refunds given, this will demonstrate you are committed to bringing about a change to your driver behaviour. This method does often bring about the required result on the day and it is then up to you to book yourself in for the driving course.
